TANŪKI / FIELD GUIDE
A little guidance.
Import your rides, inspect the data, and take the files where you need them.
Tanūki Parser is in development for iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later. There is no public download link yet. This guide describes the current test build.
Import FIT files
- Save your activity files in Files on your iPhone or iPad. If they are inside a ZIP archive, extract them first.
- Open the Import tab and choose Choose FIT files.
- Select one or several
.fitfiles, then tap Parse. Tanūki processes the batch and reports individual failures without stopping the remaining files. - Open the Library tab to find your saved rides and view an overview.
Parsing takes place on your device. Local FIT imports do not require a Strava account or a token server.
Export one ride or a batch
In Library, use selection mode to choose several rides, or select all. Choose an export format, then save the files to a destination in Files or share them through the system share sheet.
- JSON: structured summary data for each ride.
- CSV: a tabular ride stream for spreadsheets and analysis.
- Text: a plain-text summary of a locally imported ride.
- Original FIT: the imported source file.
- All files: the available files together.
Exports reflect the information available in the source. A sensor value that was not recorded cannot be recovered by parsing. Keep the original FIT file if you need a complete source archive.
Connect to Strava
The release build includes its Strava connection settings. Access remains subject to Strava approval and athlete capacity.
Once configured, the Strava tab lets you authorise your own account through Strava, browse a paginated activity feed, and open an activity to see its overview. File previews are available under Inspect exported files. Swipe right on an activity to reveal Export Data, then save or share the JSON and CSV together.
Opening an activity saves its prepared data in Library. Library can filter saved FIT and Strava rides by average speed, distance, elevation gain, and average heart rate. Each range has two handles; the end positions leave that limit open.
What the export preserves
Strava exports use a separate tanuki.strava.v1 schema. The JSON includes source information, activity details, laps, available streams, the original API response bodies, and warnings about missing information. CSV uses the recorded stream samples without inventing intermediate points.
What it cannot reproduce
The API is not an original FIT file download. Device-specific fields, unavailable metrics, and missing sensor samples may not be present. Tanūki keeps unsupported values empty rather than presenting estimates as original recordings.
Disconnecting
Open the settings gear on any main tab and choose Disconnect Strava. If server revocation cannot be confirmed, also remove Tanūki Parser from Strava's connected applications settings. Disconnecting does not remove export copies you have already saved or shared.
Make it yours
Tap the settings gear at the top of Strava, Import, or Library. Under Appearance, choose System, Light, or Dark. System follows your device; the other options keep Tanūki in your chosen appearance. Your preference is saved for the next time you open the app.
Settings also contains your Strava connection controls, app information, and installed version.
Common questions
How does Tanūki process my files?
It reads recorded activity data on your device and exports it into other formats.
Why did a file fail to import?
Check that it is an extracted FIT activity file, not a ZIP archive or a renamed file of another format. A damaged or unsupported file may not parse. Keep the source file and note the error shown in the app.
Why are some values missing?
The source may not contain those values. Strava may also expose less information than the original device file. Missing values are not evidence of a zero reading.
Why can I not see another copy of the same ride?
Tanūki recognises matching FIT imports and reuses an existing complete archive. Renaming a file does not necessarily create a new ride.
What if Strava stops loading activities?
Check your connection and the app's error message. Strava rate limits may require you to wait before retrying. If authorisation has expired or been revoked, reconnect your account.
How can I report a problem during testing?
Email hello@clemfandangostudios.com. Include the app version, device model, steps to reproduce, and the error text. Ride files can contain location and health-related data. Share them only if you intend to disclose that information.
